PRAIRIE FIRE Doctor Sirett vividly recalled the morning when the pioneers looked up from their ploughs to see great billows of smoke rolling over the western horizon. Behind them rushed a solid wall of flame. Most people had prudently fireguarded their buildings but had neglected their feed-stacks. Desperately they galloped to save the precious feed before the flames engulfed it. A few were successful but many failed. That year, the district had a struggle to pull the cattle through the tough winter. The children too, had a hard time making it to school that year. In fact during one fierce blizzard, they were obligated to stay there one whole night and half of the next day.
